How To Grow your Business Online

There are a few things every business owner needs to understand if they want to grow their business online. Unfortunately, getting new customers isn’t as simple as making a website and launching some ads; you need to understand the process and have a strong digital foundation before you can find success. Today, we at Business Warrior are going to tell you what it takes.

The first thing you need to understand is how your customers think. Most people don’t go onto Google and immediately know what they are going to buy or where they are going to buy it from. To fully take advantage of online advertising, you first need to understand your sales funnel.

What is a Sales Funnel?

Picture an upside down triangle and divide it into three or four horizontal sections (pictured). That is a visual representation of a sales funnel. It’s your job to move people from the top of the funnel all the way to the bottom.

Every person, whether they know it or not, goes through a sales funnel when they want to buy something online. You need to cater to all levels of the funnel to have success in digital advertising. Let’s break down each section.

The Top of the Funnel (Awareness)

The top section of the funnel is where most people are. People in the top of the sales funnel aren’t looking to buy — most of them are doing research. This is your chance to engage them, show them credibility, and prove to them that you’re what they need.

For example, let’s say you’re the owner of a home cleaning service. People in the top of your sales funnel are likely researching the following things:

  • Carpet cleaning services
  • Window cleaners
  • Same-day home cleaning services
  • Home cleaners near me

As you can see, this group is just looking around to find companies and specific services. Unfortunately, most of these people won’t look past Google’s first page, so if you’re not on it in any way, then you’re missing out. To do that, you’ll need a robust SEO (search engine optimization) strategy, which we’ll get into later in this blog.

Middle Section (Interest)

The middle section of your sales funnel has less people in it, but more of them are willing to buy. They’re more interested in your product and service, but are not quite ready to take action. These people are going to be searching things in Google like:

  • Home cleaning quotes
  • Cost to clean my home
  • Reviews for <your business name>

It’s much more specific with buy-intent behind the search. They’re still researching, but they’re getting ready to spend their money. Use the right language in your website and content to make sure they buy from you.

Bottom of the Sales Funnel (Decision and Action)

The bottom of the sales funnel is a goldmine. It doesn’t have a ton of people in it, but they are all ready to buy (and hopefully buy from you). This is where you drive the point home. What makes you better: offer free trials, discounts, same day service? Catch their attention early to turn them into a new customer so they make their decision and take action, a.k.a, they buy from you.

Beef Up Your Website’s SEO

SEO, or search engine optimization, is a long-term strategy that will put you on Google’s front page and increase how well your ads perform. It is how you grow your business naturally, so people can find you without coming across your directory listings or ads. We’ll give you a quick rundown on the basics.

SEO is fueled by keywords. Keywords are what people search for on search engines like Google. Remember those search phrases we pulled out during the Sales Funnel section? Those are keywords!

How Do Keywords Work?

Google uses keywords to figure out what your website is all about. That’s how your business shows up when people search for things in Google. To fully optimize a web page for a specific keyword, you’ll need to put keywords in the website’s content, in the SEO titles, meta data, alt text, and in your URL.

Blogs will be the lifeblood behind your SEO to naturally rank for more keywords, increase your credibility, and ensure your website stays active. It doesn’t need to be daily; 2+ blogs a month works just fine for beginners!

Understand Where You Should Place Ads

This one is obvious. Paid search, social media advertising and display advertising are all excellent ways of attracting visitors, building your brand, and getting your business in front of people.

Before you spend a single dollar on ads, you first have to know your audience. Know who they are and where they are. Are they on social media like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, or Instagram? If you’re advertising on Twitter, but your audience is on Facebook, then you’re losing money!

We almost guarantee they’re on Google, but you’ll have to know which ad campaign is best suited for you and for your audience: search, video, shopping, or display? And don’t forget about remarketing campaigns! It’s a lot, but with a little research and the addition of strong keywords, you’ll get there in no time.
